He becomes obsessed with social climbing. She's a rambunctious girl who rebels against her teacher's attempt to train her. She runs back to the village to find Sutemaru's family gone.
It's an interesting fable and the simple drawing style gives an impression of a children's fantasy. It turns into something much more. It's a young girl trying to grow up struggling against the world of conventions, materialism and the class divide. It's a lesson in real beauty. The drawings are beautiful and such a compelling story.

I dont know. im not too sure about this movie. ghibli studio is like masterpiece making factory. this one is directed by Isao takahata, the guy who gave us - grave of fireflies (a great movie that you should only watch once) and some not bad titles, some are weird even: only yesterday, pom poko & my neighbors the Yamada. other than grave of the fireflies, theres not much of a great line-up of ghibli titles from this director. im just worried. i just hope this new movie will be one of his best. music by joe hisaishi - love that guy! at least im sure in the music department.
